Summary

A brilliant psychologist faces the secrets and lies of her own dark past in a shocking novel of suspense by the Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author of A Familiar Sight

“Gretchen…What have you done?”

Psychologist and criminologist Dr。 Gretchen White, top consultant for the Boston PD, has solved countless cases—but never her own。 Since the age of eight, she has lived her life thinking she killed her aunt。 After all, she was found standing over the body, clutching a bloody knife。 Most people, including Detective Patrick Shaughnessy, believe the little sociopath got away with murder。 Thirty years later, Detective Lauren Marconi wants to prove them wrong。

When plucking at the threads of the past unravels a decades-old case tied to the White family, both Lauren and Gretchen grapple with the question, What if Gretchen really is guilty? As old secrets come to light and Gretchen’s lifelong grip on her darkest impulses threatens to erode, Shaughnessy is there watching, waiting for her to lose control one more time。

Everyone thinks they know what happened that night。 But the truth is beyond what anyone imagines—even Gretchen herself。

She’s a Psychologist and Criminologist who does some consulting for the Boston Police Department and specializes in Violent Crimes。 What will really grab most people (and admittedly has grabbed me) is that White is a self-proclaimed “non-violent sociopath”。 She was the prime suspect in her aunt’s murder when White was just 8-years-old。 Now, 30 years later, White and her partner Detective Lauren Marconi decide to dive into the cold case。 This felt a smidge far-fetched for me as I don’t see people being allowed to look into their own case or one where they were the key suspect but alas, that isn’t how this goes。 They look into the case and are brought up short with the twists and turns this case takes as well as the complexity and the linking with other cases。I still liked the story even though it was a bit far-fetched。 Brianna Labuskes does a fabulous job at pacing the story。 She gives us perfectly timed bombs throughout the story。 I really appreciate that the author doesn’t save the bombs for the last quarter of the book and places them strategically throughout the entire story。 The narrators, Kate Marcin and Chris Ciulla added so much to the story。 The narration was also done in dual。 I felt like they brought a lot to the story。 A good narrator can really add to a story or completely ruin it。 These two really added to the storyline。 Marcin really played into White’s flat kind of personality。 She was dry and dark… I enjoyed it a lot。 Her portrayal alone reminded me that White was a sociopath without those blasted empath reminders。 Ciulla played Reed flawlessly。 Ciulla just came off very blasé。 Overtime I started to see more of these characters true feelings and Ciulla did a great job bringing that to life。Thank you Brilliance Publishing for the complimentary copy of this audiobook with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion。 I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that。。。 my opinions。Check out my Blog: Next Book ReviewCheck out my Facebook Page: Next Book Review Facebook 。。。more

Excellent as usualI LOVE all of this author’s books and this one was no exception。 The plot is absolute genius and is a standard other authors should strive to reach。 Gretchen is unpredictable, intelligent, and a character you want to root for, even when you hate her guts。 Marconi provides an excellent balance for Gretchen and their relationship is something that I enjoyed immensely。 I can’t wait to read more of this series!
